Ciao, JCBA lovers. It has been a long time since I've written to you, and sadly, I return to say goodbye. Those who follow the blog have probably noticed my absence. My departure was to only be temporary, but it turned permanent, as I am out of state, and unable to volunteer at the wonderful Jaffe Center. The Jaffe Center is one of my favorite places in the world, and I am so proud to have been a part of it. The books are eye-opening, mind-boggling, and sometimes life-changing. The workshops are so much fun and education, and the instructors are always top notch. The skills I have learned from the workshops have widened the possibilities of my art. Also, I can't forget about the open houses, parties, and performances, which are always pleasant, creative, and quirky. One can describe them as, let's say, "kick ass."
I will add that all of this could not have happen without the exceptional crew at the Jaffe Center, who, in an unusual form for me, I enjoy more than the books. The crew is changing, and some new faces will show up most likely at your next visit. The spring's Artist in Residence Paula Morie Gourley is returning back to her home in Washington after a wonderful stay, with a fantastic book left in our possession. She will be replaced by Miami artist Tom Virgin, who is the fall's A.I.R. The Jaffe Center's first student assistant , Jonas McCaffery, has left us, but he will be replaced by student Bill Lias. Furthermore, Collection Specialist and Pianist Seth Thompson will be leaving to focus more on his ceramics, which will be an exciting change for him. Don't you worry, though, because energetic student assistant Brooke Frank, ingenious director John Cutrone, and leading-edge Arthur Jaffe will still be around, scheming up all sorts of festivities, usually over coffee and cookies. The Center is left in good hands, and I am excited to see what is in store for the place as an outsider. I think that a favorite book will always be on a shelf in your heart, and the Arthur & Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts will always be a house in my heart.
